GUE Fundamentals (tech) Exam
| February 6th, 2009Yesterday after 4 days of long and demanding work we did our pratical exam of the GUE Fundamentals on tech level. This means you get extra drills like valve drills, flow checks, backup light deployments on top of the other basic skills. So far the ride has been great I think I never learned so much about diving in so little time. Our passionate and perfectionist instructor Benji Schaub from Caribbean Gas Training is helping us a lot. Every training dive is filmed so we can review it together and see how we can improve our skills. What makes it extra demanding is that I have never dived with a rig with doubles, 40 lbs wing and steel backplate. All drills have to be performed in good trim (< 20 degrees) and buoyancy between 1,5 meters. Unfortunately we did not qualify it was a close call. The exam dive went superb smooth team work, nice trim and buoyancy. At the end of the dive we had to deploy a surface marker buoy (SMB) and do an ascent with 4 stops with an air sharing event. Our last stop at 3 meters was f*cked up... FAIL
However GUE fundamentals is not about getting a cert card it's about learning. Next week our team will make 3 training dives together and do a re-exam. Hope this works, if it does that would be great. No matter how good you think you can dive, try a GUE Fundamentals course and you really know where you are. Below some pictures of our team. So I need to get this gas dumping from my wing skill right.
